Earthenware is baked at a lower temperature (till ± 1100°), which gives brighter colours and keeps the clay slightly porous. Sometimes a glaze gives a 'craquelé' effect, a pattern of fine cracks the patina of which will deepen over time.
Stoneware is baked at a higher temperature (from ± 1200°); the clay almost turns to glass, becomes waterproof and hard as stone.
Both the earthen- and stoneware is dishwasher safe, but as dishwashers use a harsh, abrasive process, over time the glaze on items washed this way may lose their shine.
It is therefore recommended that handmade ceramics are washed by hand.
